Ann Hanchak Obituary

Ann Hanchak, 97, of Carbondale, died Thursday November 15th.  She was the widow of John Hanchak, who died in 1986.

Born in Carbondale, to a large family of 10 brothers and sisters, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Genevieve Chellino, who owned the former Chellino Hotel, Carbondale.  She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale, and a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. Ann was perhaps best known as the matriarch of the Crystal Pines Restaurant, Crystal Lake.  Ann was a wonderful cook and a hard worker.  Her signature dish was undoubtedly her shrimp scampi. Many patrons would have loved to have the recipe but Ann even refused to share it with Bon Appetite, when the magazine requested the recipe based on the recommendation of several readers!

Ann was a devoted grandmother who was very proud of her family and cherished her three granddaughters.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Ann’s caregiver, Cindy Gallick, for her compassionate care.

Surviving are a daughter: Jennifer Hanchak Galko; a son: William “Billy” Gentile and his wife Barbara; three granddaughters: Jacqueline Galko Cook and husband John;  Anna Gentile Gill and husband Chris; Jennifer Gentile Jordan and husband Mark; six great-grandchildren: Johna and Josette Cook; Nadia and Aidan Gill; and Giada and Carter Jordan; a brother-in-law: Nick Hanchak; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers: Frank, Sammy, and Jerry Chellino; seven sisters: Josephine DeLuca, Carmella Chellino, Catherine Gillot, Mildred Koch, Mary Rubano, Annette McDermott.

The funeral will be Tuesday, November 20th, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 15 Fallbrook Street, Carbondale.  Interment will follow in St. John’s Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Mayfield.  Friends may call Tuesday at the church from 10am until mass time.  Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
