Bernard M. “Bernie” Sklanka, 68, of Childs, died Wednesday, October 17th at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife is the former Mary Ann Blinn.
Born in Forest City, son of the late Walter and Genevieve Piatkowski Sklanka, he was a graduate of Forest City Regional High School and Lackawanna Jr. College, Scranton. He was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the 101st Airborne Division. While stationed in Vietnam, he was twice awarded the Purple Heart and the Vietnam National Defense Service Medal. Bernie was a member of the Shopa-Davey VFW Post 6082, Peckville. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a machinist and the benefits representative at General Dynamics, Eynon. Bernie enjoyed rooting for the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Also surviving are two sons: Wesley and wife, Jennie Lynn, Union Dale; and Christopher, Forest City; and one granddaughter who was the love of his life and called him PopPop: Maggie.
The funeral will be Tuesday, October 23rd with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in Saint Joseph’ Church, Delaware St., Forest City. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Forest City. Friends may call Tuesday morning at the church from 9 am until mass time. Arrangements by the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City.
