Joseph Price Sr Obituary

Joseph P. Price, Sr., 89, of Clarks Summit, and formerly of Carbondale, died on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the Carbondale Nursing Center after a brief illness. His wife of 64 years is the former Barbara Moore.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Gerald J. and Mildred Judge Price, he was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale and the University of Scranton.

He was also a member of the first class at Scranton Preparatory School at its inception in 1944. He attended the Hartford College of Insurance and was employed by the Phoenix Insurance Company as a fire underwriter in Hartford, CT.

He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy. From 1950 to 1953, he was assigned to the USS Jupiter and was awarded several decorations, including the Navy Occupational Medal, United Nations Ribbon, Korea Service Medal with one silver star and three bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Upon discharge from the Navy, he joined his father as owner of The Price Insurance Agency, Carbondale until his retirement. Joseph was a life-long member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, Carbondale, until his move to Clarks Summit in 2004, when he became a member of Our Lady of Snows/Church of St. Benedict where he enjoyed attending daily mass and made frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament during the week. He was a weekly Novena client at St. Ann's Shrine Basilica and had a great devotion to Padre Pio. In his younger years Joe enjoyed golf and playing the piano and organ.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank to you Debbie, his home health aide, and the staff at the Carbondale Nursing Home, Geisinger CMC Hospital, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the compassionate care given to Joseph.

Along with his wife, Barbara, Joseph is survived by his eight children: daughters: Jane Strony and husband Greg, Dickson City, and Mary Frazier and husband Thomas, Fitzwilliam, NH; sons: Gerald and wife Lisa, Littlestown, PA; Joseph and wife Jenna, San Diego, CA; Rev. James, C.P., Carbondale; Kevin, Union Dale; Patrick and wife Michelle, Bellgooley, Co. Cork Ireland; and Raymond and wife Krea, Carbondale; twelve grandchildren: Heather Brady, Jonathan Bryan, Ryan Strony, Cameron, Devan, Alexis, Audrey, Arianna and Calum Price, Olivia, Elijah, and Ethan Frazier; and one great grandson: Lucas Brady; and cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his sister Jane in 1936 an infant son John in 1968, and his special aunt Mary "Mimi" Price who helped raise him in 1980.

The was Thursday, September 26th, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 North Church Street, Carbondale, to be celebrated by the Most Rev. Neil Tiedemann, C.P., Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn. Interment with military honors will follow in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale. All those attending the funeral Thursday are asked to go directly to the church.

Memorial contributions can be made in Joseph's name to St. Ann's Shrine Basilica, 1233 St. Ann Street, Scranton, PA 18504 and the Carbondale Nursing Center Activities Fund, 10 Hart Place, Carbondale, PA 18407.
