Noreen Swegel Obituary

Noreen G. Rotherforth Swegel, 83, of Herrick Center, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 1, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was the wife of Sir Robert Swegel; the couple was married for 63 years.

Born in Vandling, she was the daughter of the late Cyril and Doris Newton Rotherforth, and, upon the early death of her mother, when she was 5 years old, she was raised by her paternal grandmother, the late Cora Rotherforth. She was a graduate of Forest City High School class of 1952 and a member of Ascension Parish, Forest City. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her husband, also surviving are a son, Col. Jeffrey Swegel and wife, Destrianne, Vandling; a daughter, Janine (Swegel) Martin and husband, Richard, Hanover, Md.; a sister, Maxine (Rotherforth) Bailey, Apalachin, N.Y.; a half-brother, Gary Rotherforth, Forest City; five grandchildren, Stefan Swegel and wife, Jessica; Jake and Felicia Martin; Robert and Abigail Swegel; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Addie Mae Swegel; and a plethora of nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy Rotherforth.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Wayne Home Health, the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, DaVita of Eynon and all the other doctors and nurses who dedicated their time to taking care of her.

The funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 5, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Delaware Street, Forest City. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Forest City. 

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main St., Forest City, and at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until Mass time.
