Ann Cecelia Cook Carney Obituary

Ann Cecelia Cook Carney, 103, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on Monday December 15th.  She was the widow of Gerald Carney, who passed away on May 16, 2008.

Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Battle Cook, she was a lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Carbondale and a decade’s long supporter of the Maryknoll Fathers, as well as dozens of other religious organizations.  Ann was a graduate of St. Rose High School, Class of 1940, and the Lackawanna Business School. She was initially employed at the Lackawanna County Courthouse prior to starting a long career in the local banking industry beginning with the former First National Bank of Carbondale, now NBT Bank.  She loved all children but most especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her affectionate nickname "Mrs. Christmas" was well earned and absolutely deserved.

She is now reunited with her beloved husband Jerry so that they can once again celebrate together at their favorite time of the year.

The family would like to thank Dr. Neal Davis and his staff in Carbondale, as well as the entire team at Ellen Memorial Health Center in Honesdale for their compassion and excellent care.

Surviving are a son: John (Valerie), Pittsburgh; two daughters: Kathleen (Robert) Reedy, Schuylkill Haven; and Ellen, Carbondale. four grandchildren: Sarah (Jesse) Thornburg; Sean (Megan) Reedy; Caitlan (Jarek) Ingros; and Catharine Carney; five great grandchildren: Evelyn Thornburg; William Thornburg; Elizabeth Rose Thornburg; Nolan Ingros; and Emmett Ingros; a sister-in-law: Sheila Kilker Cook; five nieces: Sheila, Maureen, Clarita, Janan and Molly; a nephew: Michael ,and all of their spouses and families.   She is also survived by her Carney cousins: Joseph, Noreen, Linda, Lorna, Kevin, Megan and their spouses and families.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Mary; brother: Eugene Cook; sister-in-law: Evelyn Cook; brother: Harry Cook, her husband's parents: Anna Clark Carney and Frank Carney; aunt: Martha Battle Peduto; and grand niece: Leah Loomis.

The funeral will be Friday, December 19th with a private Mass of Christian Burial for family at 10 am in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  Interment will follow at St. Rose Cemetery, Carbondale.  There will be no public calling hours.  Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
