Augustus “Gus” DeMark , 91, of Forest City , died at home on Saturday May 1, 2021 after suffering heart failure while under the round-the-clock care by his daughter Marie. Gus was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Marge, who died on April 24, 2020.
Born in 1929 in Mayfield to the late John and Josephine Phillips DeMark, Gus was the oldest of three children. He graduated from Mayfield High School in 1947 and adopted Forest City as the place he wanted to live and raise a family. Gus was a hard-working family man, who often worked two jobs, while his wife stayed at home caring for their children. A community minded man, Gus was an early volunteer with the Forest City Ambulance and with the Enterprise Hose Company. One of his second jobs was as a part-time Forest City police officer.
Gus was an avid bowler, golfer and billiards player. He especially enjoyed the league competitions where he excelled. Not many people can claim to have outscored him at a game of eight ball on the pool table. And he often surprised his opponents on the links at how far and straight he could hit a golf ball. He would tell you that despite all his wins and trophies his greatest achievement is his family.
Gus is survived by his brother, John J. DeMark, and by his three children, Jack (Lisa) DeMark, Marie Rutsky, and David (Laurie) DeMark, and by five grandchildren, Katie, Kiley, Austin, Emma and Ben and one great grandchild, Rylan Scanlan.
Gus was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Zazzera and by his grandson Nathan Brownell.
Gus’s family is grateful for the compassionate end of life care provided by Home Health Care Professionals and Hospice, especially Joan, Cheryl, Kathy, Mia, Judy and Norm.
A private interment and service will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Forest City with arrangements under the care and direction of the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Ascension Parish, Forest City on a date to be announced.
