Barbara Ackemann, RN, 92, of Marietta, GA, and formerly of Carbondale, died June 10th. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Stanley Ackemann, who died in July 1995, and her second husband, Gerard Conva, who died in February 2004.
Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late James Frances and Hilda Theresa Walsh Tierney, she was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, both of Carbondale; she later went to graduate from the Mount Sinai School of Nursing in New York, where she earned her RN degree. She worked as a nurse in New York City for 5 years before getting married and raising her children. Barbara was well liked by all and had a good sense of humor; she always had a great group of friends wherever she lived. She had a zest for life and loved a good practical joke; she was once able to convince a bus driver in New York City to let her drive his bus down 5th Avenue at 2am. She was artistic and a loyal, devoted mother. After getting married, having four children and living in the Bronx, NY, Barbara and Stan moved to Croton-on-Hudson in Westchester County NY. Barbara was a class mother, and big supporter of community sports. She went back to work when her kids were older and worked at St. Theresa's, caring for the elderly Brothers and Priests of Maryknoll. She then worked at the Westchester County Medical Center as a nurse at the correctional facility. She loved to cook, was artistic and developed a great passion for crocheting blankets which included baby blankets for the local charities. After Stan passed, Barbara sold the family house and moved to Marietta, GA where she resided near her son, Jeff and his family; she created another loving community where she became everyone's beloved Grandma Barb.
Surviving are her children: Jeffrey Ackemann and wife Julie; Beth Foster; Melissa McGowan and husband Kevin; grandchildren: Emily McCoy and husband Bryce; Meghan Ackemann; Danielle Moreno; Brian and Heather McGowan; a brother: James Tierney and wife Diane; four nephews: James Tierney and wife Suzy; Thomas Tierney and wife Angela; Sean Tierney and wife Laura; and Patrick Tierney and wife Stacey; four nieces: Debbie Skotleski and husband Mike; Kelly Munley; Shannon Penzone; Tara Golenski and husband Stephen and numerous great nieces and nephews.
