Betty Speicher

Betty Speicher, 76, of Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 3rd, surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Jerry “Spike” Speicher, who died May 6, 2005.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Thomas and Betty Dougher Gibbons, Betty spent most of her life in Carbondale, where she built a life centered on caring for others, both professionally and personally. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carbondale.  She was a graduate of Lakeland High School and the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing.  Betty dedicated 33 years of her life as a nurse at Mid Valley Hospital. She was known not only for her skill and dedication in her profession, but also for her compassion, kindness, and the comfort she brought to countless patients and families over the years. Above all else, Betty’s greatest joy was her family. She loved spending time with them. Her grandchildren were truly the light of her life. Betty will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her warm spirit, and the way she made everyone feel welcome and cared for. She was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Ellen Memorial Health Care Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassionate care.

Surviving are her daughter: Melissa Speicher Malpass and her husband Chuck; her grandchildren: Meghan, Abbie, and Lucas; along with many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory forever.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Tommy Speicher; and her sisters-in-law: Sally Kozlowski; Judy Weckel; and Kay Morrison, who always made her feel like a sister.

Private interment will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.  A memorial mass will be held on Saturday June 13th at 9:30 am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Fallbrook St, Carbondale.  Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
