Bob Carney, 75, of Carbondale, died Thursday July 17th at home.
Born in Peckville, the eldest son of the late Joseph and Mary Joan McHale Carney, he was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Carbondale. He was educated at St. Thomas Aquinas School, Archbald, and was a graduate of St. Rose High School, Carbondale. He was also a graduate of Marywood University, where he received his Masters Degree in Special Education. At one time, he was a guidance counselor for St. Rose High School. He worked as a bank teller at First National Bank in Carbondale and was also employed in the family business, Carney’s Drug Store, Carbondale. Bob would be best remembered for his strong will and perseverance. At 21 years old, he had viral encephalitis that required three brain surgeries. His survival was truly a miracle. After extensive hospitalization and rehabilitation, he was able to live independently and earn his masters degree. Bob had a green thumb. His 3rd floor window was the perfect location for his many plants. Most recently, he placed a bird feeder there and watched them for hours on end. He made his own muffins, usually whole grain fiber bombs. If you had the pleasure of knowing Bob, please raise a glass and toast with us; his favorite beverages were V-8 Energy Drinks (Peach Mango) and Genesee beer.
Bob loved the YMCA and attending Zumba class. His big smile throughout the class got even wider for the fireball song. He was proud of his Irish heritage. Despite living in Carbondale most of his life, he always considered Archbald his hometown, where he grew up early in life. He always rooted for the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He was never a gambler, but he could frequently be heard asking if we wanted to bet 25 Big Ones on a game (he meant a quarter!). He was truly an inspiration to his siblings and all those who knew him.
Bob never complained and made it a point to do whatever he could for himself. He will be greatly missed, especially by his loving family.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thanks to all who looked out for Bob, especially his good Samaritan neighbors.
Surviving are his siblings: Joseph Carney, Jr. and wife Cindy; Noreene Carney (triplet); Linda Melnick and husband Michael; Lorna Maurer and husband Paul; Kevin Carney; Megan Tremback and husband Mark; nieces and nephews: Rachael; McHala; Victoria; Morgan; Megan; Madison; and Evan; grand nieces and grand nephews: Aiden; Kalu; and; and several cousins.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters: Mary and Ann Carney (triplets).
The funeral will be Thursday, July 24th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Friends may call at the church from 9 am until mass time. Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
