Carl Edward Mills of Creamton, Pennsylvania died April 4, 2023, at the Forest City Nursing and Rehab Center after a short stay. Carl was 76 years old and grew up in Creamton on the Mills family dairy farm. Carl attended Aldenville elementary school and graduated from Waymart High School. After earning an ROTC scholarship, he attended and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics.
After graduation from college Carl served in the US Navy earning the rank of Lieutenant and later Captain as a Navy aviator. He flew planes extensively for the Navy in East Asia and spent three years as a flight instructor in Great Britain training pilots during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Navy, Carl spent time in California and Oregon where he flew for United Airlines. He returned home to Pennsylvania to care for his mother after the death of his father and worked as a pilot for Pocono airlines in Avoca.
Carl was an avid social justice advocate and environmentalist who enjoyed organic gardening and making maple syrup. He fought a 27-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Rarely complaining, he was buoyed by the strong spiritual and physical support he received from his friends, neighbors, caregivers, the Veterans Administration, and the Wayne County Agency on Aging.
Carl was predeceased by his father Clifford Mills and his mother Eliza Boyea Mills. He is survived by his cousin Lawrence Kabat and his family of Concord, North Carolina, his cousin Maynard Douglas and his family of Cold Spring, Pennsylvania, and his companion and caregiver Maria Grimaldi of Youngsville, New York.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, Forest City, Pennsylvania. Internment is scheduled for Friday May 19, 2023, 2:00 pm at the Clinton Center Cemetery. A memorial celebration of Carl’s life is being planned for a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers or other tributes, contributions in Carl Mills’ memory may be made to the Forest City Ambulance Corps, the Pleasant Mount Ambulance Corps, or the Browndale Fire Company.
