Dorothy Rose Phillips, 96, formerly of Forest City, died Friday April 24th at the Tribute at One Loudoun Senior Living Community, Ashburn, VA. She was the widow of Daniel Phillips.
Daughter of the late Anton and Agnes Gantar Erzen, Dorothy was born in 1924 and raised in Forest City, the daughter of a coal miner with five sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1942, passed a typing test and went to Washington, DC to work for the Navy Dept in support of the WWII war effort.
Dorothy eventually married and became devoted to raising her family of two boys, eventually returning to work for the federal government. At age 58 she became a widower. Through the years Dorothy was incredibly loyal to her family and enjoyed annual trips to Forest City spending time visiting with siblings and their families. Later in life, Dorothy lived in Maryland near her two grown boys. She loved to cook lavish dinners and invite her “boys” over for a delicious meal, conversation and huge leftovers to take home. On special occasions, Dorothy would cook up or bake Slovenian meals including kielbasa and potica. But, nothing put a smile on her face quicker than when her grandchildren came for visits, which she relentlessly spoiled completely. Dorothy took pleasure in sewing, with many 70’s huk-a-poo dress shirts for her boys being a favorite. She also dabbled in creating craft paintings and proudly hung several around her home. Dorothy enjoyed traveling to her Slovenian homeland and reconnecting with relatives, as well as trips to New York City and Disney World with the grandkids.
