It is with great sadness that we send Dr. Thomas P. “Art” Smith, 68, of Kingston, home to be with the Lord. Art died Sunday, August 28th at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Terri Burdo Smith.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late William J. and Marion Burke Smith, he was a member of Saint Ignatius Church, Kingston. He was a graduate of Saint Rose High School, Carbondale, Class of 1972; he received his Bachelor's Degree from Bloomsburg University and his Masters Degree from Marywood University. He was also a graduate of the Beck Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, and he received his Doctorate of Psychology degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Smith began his career with the University of Scranton in the Counseling Center in 1989, becoming director of the center in 2003. He retired from the University of Scranton in 2019 and continued his 30 year private practice. Until his unexpected death, Dr. Smith had been employed by the Lackawanna County Treatment Court. During his career, he also served on the boards of numerous professional and community organizations.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Smith is also survived by his daughter: Sydney Smith-Senese and husband Shawn, Plains; a brother: William Smith and wife Lois, Ormond Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday, September 2nd with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Friends may call Thursday, from 4 to 7 pm at the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, and on Friday morning at the church from 11 am until mass time.
