George Zarekas

George Zarekas passed away on December 31, 2021, at the age of 98.

George was born in Carbondale, Pennsylvania to parents who had immigrated to the United States from Lithuania. George briefly worked in the coal mine before joining the US Army during World War II. During the war, he served in a tank division that fought from Normandy to Berlin. Upon his return home, George married Marjorie Leventhal, and they had a daughter, Carol. Having survived the war, George decided to take chances in life and found success in hospitality and real estate. He started by briefly owning a small bar in Carbondale before purchasing and running the Waymart Hotel and Restaurant for several years, selling it in 1955 and moving to Fort Lauderdale. There, George built, ran, and sold three hotels: The North Shore, The Carib, and The Sun Tower. George made time to return to Carbondale every year to stay close to friends and family. While there, he spent much of his time at Newton Lake where he developed a community of homes.

George was predeceased by his daughter, Carol. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marjorie, his grandson, Steven Murphy and his wife Kristin, and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Charlotte. Marjorie would like to thank her niece, Deborah Ruddy, along with Dr. Neil Davis and staff, for all the care they provided to George over the years.
