John E. Moran Obituary

John E. “Pop” Moran, 74, of Carbondale, passed peacefully at his home on Monday, July 21, 2025, after a long illness. He is survived by wife, Mary Ellen Rusek Moran.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Kenneth C. and Mabel Packer Moran, he was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Carbondale. He was a graduate of the Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. A strong advocate for Lackawanna County’s economy, culture and environment, John served two terms as Mayor and two terms as Councilman for the City of Carbondale. He was a founding member of the Lackawanna County Heritage Valley Authority and a 17-year member of the Lackawanna County Planning Commission. John proudly owned and operated Moran’s Tavern in Carbondale for 30 years.

John was very involved in the community: he was a volunteer firefighter for decades and served honorably as President of the Columbia Hose Co. No. 5. Throughout his life, John advocated to ensure appropriate resources for the fire department and emergency medical services for the City of Carbondale. He was a proud, life-long member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians and a member of the Trinity Club.

John loved spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling, including driving across the country multiple times, exploring National Parks and visiting baseball stadiums. John had two favorite baseball teams: the Orioles and any team that was playing against the Yankees.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by his great-nephew Tommy Moran, as well as Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and care nurses Henry and Stephanie, all of whose dedication and kind presence ensured his comfort at home throughout his illness.

Also surviving are daughter Susan Moran and husband Lawrence Buckley; and daughter Marianne Moran and long-term partner Quinn Tracy; a sister Grace Newcomb; a brother Joseph Moran and wife Cathy; a sister Margaret Calzola and husband Albert; a brother James Moran; as well as a large extended family.

John is predeceased by his son John C. Moran; and siblings Betty, Charles, Thomas Walter, Katherine and Paul.

The funeral will be Thursday July 24th from the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment, St. Rose Cemetery, Carbondale. Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm.
