Joseph Thomas Munley, Jr., 65, of Wesley Chapel, FL, formerly of Carbondale, PA passed away after a long and courageous battle, at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, FL on March 11, 2025. His wife of 45 years is Cynthia McHale Munley.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Joseph Munley Sr. and Elizabeth Mills Munley, he was a graduate of Carbondale Area High School and Marywood College. He proudly served in the United States Army as an infantry medic with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC and also in Augsburg, West Germany. Joe was the recipient of numerous medals including two Purple Hearts and a Bronze star. Joe was a former member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, a member of St. Mark the Evangelist in Tampa, a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Cottage Hose Ambulance Corps in Carbondale, the American Legion Post 328, Archbald, and Paralyzed Veterans of America, Tampa. Joe was very proud of his sons and their spouses and absolutely adored his granddaughters.
Our family would like to thank the entire staff of the Tampa VA Hospital’s SCI unit, MICU, and CICU for their excellent care and support, our wonderful families and friends in PA, FL, and SC for their prayers and support. A special thank you to Gerri and Mark, who were with us every step of the way.
In addition to his wife, Cindy, he is survived by his four sons: Joseph (Beth) and their daughters, Emily, Nashville, TN, Abby (Sonny), CA and Liz (Vin), Netherlands; Patrick (Michelle) New Port Richey, FL; Timothy (Katrina) and their daughters, Delaney and Quinn, Mountain Top, PA; and Brian, Tallahassee, FL; his sister Gerri Evans and her husband Mark, Old Forge, PA; cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, Joe was preceded in death by his daughter: baby Kaitlyn; three sisters and their husbands: Rosemarie and Barry Cornell; Marcille and Jimmy Barbour; and Joanne and Mark Chambers; cousin: Michael Munley; nephews: Tommy Cornell and baby Mark Evans; great-niece: baby Amanda Wolven and great-nephew: baby Ty Connolly.
The funeral will be Saturday, May 31st with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Friends may call at the church from 8:30 am until mass time.
