Leroy “Roy” Baumgardner, 88, of Carbondale, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 26th. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, the former Lurene Roberts.
Born in Elmhurst, son of the late Leroy and Mary Glusauskas Baumgardner, and step-son of the late Walter Spooner, he was a member of The Waymart Church. He was a graduate of Scranton Tech High School and served in the National Guard for over a decade. Roy was such a kind man, whose unassuming nature belied his many talents. He was a skilled craftsman, spending a majority of his working years in construction, many as a roofer for Contempri Homes in Taylor. As a testament to his work ethic, despite the physical demands of his profession, Roy continued to work into his seventies before retiring. If there was a project that anyone needed, somehow Roy would happily either fix it or build it. He loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. His common sense values and the laws of nature were a perfect match. Although grateful for life’s simple pleasures, he was also adventurous. He rode motorcycles, loved cars, especially antiques, could roller-skate with the best of them, and was fascinated with aviation, even co-piloting a handful of small-plane flights. Perhaps most impressive, is the love, respect, and admiration his children, step-children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have for this humble, soft spoken man. A life lived proving that actions truly do speak louder than words.
In addition to his wife, Roy is also survived by son, Leroy “Lee” Baumgardner and wife Rose, Waymart; step-daughters: Debra Salvi and husband Frank, White Plains, NY, Valerie McGowan and husband Robert, Jermyn; sisters, June Cummings, Carbondale, and Paula Shanley Olyphant, grandchildren Leroy, Bryce, Taylor, Nina, Matthew, Sofia, and Riley; great grandchildren, Hunter, Morgan, Lucas, and Willow; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter: Sherry Chiesa; and sisters: Marilee Fisher and Dolores McGraw Holzman
The funeral will be Wednesday November 2nd with services at 6 pm in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, to be celebrated by Pastor Sal Maiorana. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart. Friends may call Wednesday, from 4 pm until service time.
