Margaret McDonald Obituary

Margaret “Peggy” Pope McDonald, 97, of Stroudsburg and formerly of Carbondale, died Tuesday June 30th at St. Luke’s Monroe Hospital, Stroudsburg.  She was the widow of Joseph Patrick McDonald, Sr., who died June 26, 2024.

Born in Carbondale on December 22, 1928, daughter of the late William and Catherine Ryan Pope, she was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  Peggy was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Class of 1946, Carbondale, and a graduate of the Lackawanna Business School, Scranton.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a secretary for the Lackawanna County Vocational Technical School, having worked at the North Vo-Tech Campus for numerous years.  She had previously been employed by the Gentex Corporation, Simpson.  Peggy was the last surviving member of the “Castlettes” a social group of Benjamin Franklin High  School girl friends who rented a small cottage at Newton Lake (the “Castle”) in 1943, then gathered monthly at each other’s homes or seasonal outings  for over 50 years, supporting each other through good times and bad. .

The family is grateful for the staff at Asbury Grace Park especially Nicole, Julie, Danielle, Bri, Diane and T. She was blessed with good friends at AGP especially Sallie, Doris and Elizabeth and the faithful visits of Deacon Phil and Marie. Although her eyesight was failing she enjoyed sending cards to family and friends as she fondly remembered birthdays and holidays.

Surviving are four children: Dr. Ann McDonald, Swiftwater; Attorney Joseph P. McDonald, Jr. and wife Linda, Stroudsburg; Kevin X. McDonald and wife Ashby, Annapolis, MD; Catherine “Cathy” McDonald Davenport and husband Scott, Carlisle; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren (and counting!); a sister: Kathryn “Kay” Pope Iyoob, Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son-in-law: Myron Korman; a brother: William Pope ; and a sister: Ann Pope Monahan.
 

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 8th from 3 to 6pm at Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 9th at 10 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
