Marjorie Leventhal Zarekas, of Carbondale, passed away on Tuesday June 21, 2022, at the age of 95.
Born in Carbondale, Marjorie started out working for the Sitzco Dress Co. where she sewed parachutes during World War II. In 1950, she married George Zarekas and they had a daughter, Carol. That same year they purchased and ran the Waymart Hotel and Restaurant, making famous their original pizza recipe. In 1955, they sold the Waymart Hotel and pioneered to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where they built, ran, and sold three hotels: The North Shore, The Carib, and The Sun Tower. In retirement, she served on the St. Joseph’s Hospital Board, helping organize the annual charity ball. While she worked hard, Marjorie was also an adventurer who enjoyed cruises traveling to countless ports across four continents. Along the way, Marjorie made many lifelong friends who she deeply valued and who remember her for her kindness.
Marjorie was predeceased by her daughter, Carol, and husband of 72 years, George. She is survived by her grandson, Steven Murphy, and his wife, Kristin, and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Charlotte.
