Michael Murnin, Sr. Obituary

Michael J. Murnin, Sr., a retired union carpenter and lifelong resident of Vandling, died peacefully on Wednesday January 13th at the age of 86 after a battle with Alzheimer’s and a recent battle with COVID-19.  He is survived by his wife, Julia R. Vavro Murnin.

Born in Vandling in 1934, he was the son of the late Michael and Delores Gleason Murnin.  He was a graduate of Vandling High School, and he served in the United States Army for 2 years, having been stationed in Germany.  He was a member of Ascension Parish, Forest City.  Michael worked as a carpenter since a young age and belonged to the Carpenters Union for over 60 years.  His life was characterized by his devotion to his family as a loving father, his role as a provider, and his unmatched work ethic.  Through his years of work as a carpenter, Michael touched the lives of many and established relationships throughout the local community.  Throughout his life, he had a number of interests that included fishing and hunting.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Frank Moro, who provided a high level of care and compassion for many years.  The family would also like to thank the staff of Elmcroft Senior Living Center who assisted in the last part of Michael’s battle with Alzheimer’s.

Also surviving are his children: Michael J. Murnin, Jr. and wife Kathleen; Dr. Patrick Murnin and wife Cheryl; Dr. Mark Murnin and wife Kim; Robert Murnin and wife Holly; 8 grandchildren: Michael, III; Jenifer and husband Tom; Patrick, Christopher, Marissa; Matthew; Jessica; and Timothy; two great grandchildren: Remi Anne and Mason; a sister: Ann Majdic and husband Henry; sisters-in-law: Rose Filipski; Evelyn Vavro; and Joan Murnin.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Jim, Francis, and John; and two sisters: Margaret and Colette.

Due to COVID-19 considerations, there will be a private Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph’s Church, Forest City with interment in Saint Agnes Cemetery, Forest City that will be limited to immediate family members.  Arrangements by the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City.
