Patricia A. Loftus, 89, of Carbondale, passed away Wednesday, July 26th, at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. She was the widow of Gerald Joseph Loftus, who died April 29, 2006.
Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Russell and Dorotha Faatz Sampson, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale. She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Class of 1951. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a secretary at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital and Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale. She was a loving mother and grandmother, always attending Little League games and other activities. She enjoyed shopping and going out for lunch with her friends.
To those who knew her best, Pat was a loving mom and grandmother who doted on her children, and especially, on her grandchildren. She never missed her children’s games, recitals, or any other activities they were involved in, and she loved nothing better than to attend those same activities for her grandchildren. Pat was very family oriented. She retired from her job to care for two of her pre-school aged grandchildren; she gave excellent care to her father during his lengthy illness, and she was a caregiver to one of her sisters-in-law prior to her passing. Her two best friends were her cousin Joyce and her sister-in-law Anne Marie. She loved her job at Marian Community Hospital and continued for many years after her retirement to speak joyfully about the wonderful people she worked with. She loved music and could often be found singing along as her husband Jerry played their favorite songs on the piano, or listening to the Beatles, the Mamas and Papas, or Roy Orbison on her CD player.
Surviving are a daughter: Kimberly Loftus-Toy, Carbondale; a son: Shaun Gerald Loftus and wife Jennifer, Peckville; five grandchildren: Sydney Elizabeth and Justin Jacob Toy; Lucy Ann, Sadie Jane, and Jack Gerald Loftus; a brother: Douglas Sampson and wife Anne Marie, Carbondale; a sister-in-law: Ann Marie Sampson, Roseland, NJ; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Sampson.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary’s Villa and the nurses and staff at the Regional Hospital of Scranton for the excellent care given to Patricia.
