Paul J. McGovern

Paul J. McGovern, 94, of Carbondale and a prominent Carbondale businessman, died Monday May 24th at Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart.  He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Cecelia DeLuca, who died in 2010.

Born in Jermyn, son of the late Harold T. and Mary Walsh McGovern, he was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  After graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, in 1944, Paul enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a Corpsman during World War II.  He was also a graduate of East Stroudsburg University.  He was the retired owner and operator of the McGovern Insurance Agency.  Paul was a member of the Andrew Mitchell Hose Company #1, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Kiwanis Club, all of Carbondale.  He was also a member of the Elkview Country Club.  Paul enjoyed his summers at Elk Lake, spending every summer there since 1937.  Whether on his golf cart at the lake, at the office with clients, or out while having a cup of coffee or breakfast, Paul genuinely enjoyed socializing and talking to people.

The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Haley and his staff for the compassionate care given to Paul.

Surviving are two daughters: Jody and her husband William Mabee, Naples, FL; Cecelia McGovern, Philadelphia; two sons: Harold McGovern, Browndale; Paul McGovern and his wife Debra, Greenfield Twp.; 9 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister: Mary Louise “Molly” Kohn.

The funeral will be Friday, May 28th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  Entombment with military honors will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Mausoleum, Finch Hill.  Friends may call Friday at the church, from 10:30 am until mass time.  The family asks that all those attending the funeral follow CDC guidelines.  Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
