Richard Willis Obituary

Richard J. Willis, 78, of Carbondale, died Thursday February 29th at Geisinger CMC, Scranton.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Roderick and Winfred Coggins Willis, he was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale.  He was a veteran of the Pennsylvania National Guard, 109th Infantry.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a waiter and bartender at the Concord Hotel in Monticello, NY.  Many people enjoyed his storytelling and his great sense of humor; he would often share all of the jokes that he learned while working at the Concord Hotel.  He was affectionately known as the “Candyman” because of his love of Hershey Chocolate Bars.

Surviving are three sisters: Sister Maureen Willis, IHM, Scranton; Sister Doreen Willis, IHM, Silver Spring, MD; Patricia Cornell and husband Allan, Millsboro, Delaware; four nephews; and six great nieces.

The funeral will be Saturday March 23rd with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  Interment, St. Rose Cemetery, Carbondale.  Friends may call Saturday at the church from 9 am until mass time.  Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale.
