Robert Joseph Smith, 67, of Carbondale, died Tuesday December 22nd at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Robert J. and Marion Loftus Smith, Sr., he was a graduate of Carbondale Area High School, and he attended St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran of the Vietnam War. During his career in the Marines, he served as Crew Chief on Marine One for President Carter. He was later employed by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. Robert went on to become a “Founding Member” of the Department of Homeland Security, working as an agent for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Surviving are five children: Troy Smith, Carbondale; Alexis Myers and husband Bert, Mandeville, LA; Molly Smith and Nicolas Smith, Covington, LA; Shelby Smith, Oklahoma; five grandchildren: Anthony and Payton Smith, Morrisville; Quinn and Sawyer Myers, Mandeville, LA; Luke Smith, Covington, LA; a brother: Paul Smith, Carbondale; two sisters: Mary Carol Teeple and husband Jack, Archbald; Cathy Vadella, Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a nephew: Jackie Teeple, III; and a brother-in-law: Pat Vadella.
The funeral will be Monday, December 28th, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment, Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no public viewing. Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale.
