Sonia L. Baldwin, 82, of Mayfield, died Thursday March 28th at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was the widow of Joseph J. Baldwin, who died March 28, 2010; the couple was married on December 13, 1958.
Born in Buffalo, NY, daughter of the late Byron J. Ormsby and Vivian Dewey Ormsby Mishowski, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carbondale. She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. She was a loving wife and mother who devoted her time to her family. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Air Force Sergeants’ Association and the DAV Auxiliary, where she held numerous local, state, and national offices. She was inducted into the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, where she received their Humanitarian Award. She was also a longtime volunteer along with her husband at the VA Hospital, Wilkes-Barre and the Northeast Veterans’ Center, Scranton. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 10 years and a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed fishing, camping, knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, gardening, and her computer. She also enjoyed her trips to the casino and visiting with her grandchildren; and she was a member of the Valley Lanes Women’s Bowling League for several years.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the compassionate care given to Sonia.
Surviving are five daughters: Cynthia Arnold and husband Kenneth C., Childs; Joyce Decker and husband Carl, South Gibson; Jo Brennan and husband Patrick, Carbondale; Cheryl Walsh, Dunmore; Kathleen Virbitsky and husband Alan, Scott Twp.; two brothers: Richard Ormsby, Browndale; Ronald Misihowsky, Montdale; a sister: Nancy Hughes, Pompano Beach, FL; a step-sister: Frances Thomas, Carbondale; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, including a special cousin Sandra Sheare Miller, who helped Sonia during the last few months; and her caregivers Debbie and Eddie Unis, who she considered a bonus daughter and son.
She was also preceded in death by a son: David John Baldwin; a brother: Byron Ormsby; and a sister: Robin Rydell.
The funeral will be Saturday April 6th in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, with services at 11 am by Pastor Andy Repenning. Interment will follow at Valley View Memorial Park, Montdale. Friends may call Saturday morning, from 9 am until service time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sonia’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital; the American Heart Association; or the American Cancer Society.
