Sophie Urbas Obituary

Sophie B. Urbas, 94, formerly of Forest City, suddenly passed away at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, on Monday August 24th.  Her husband, the late Carl Urbas, died February 7, 1996.

Born and raised in Richmondale, daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Zuponcic Simoncic, she was a graduate of Fell Township High School, Class of 1943.  Sophie was a member of Ascension Parish, Forest City, the Slovenian Heritage Club, the Women’s VFW Auxiliary, The American Legion Auxiliary, the Golden Age Club of Simpson, and the Forest City Senior Citizens Club.  She was also a KSKJ member.  For many years, she was a volunteer at American Red Cross Bloodmobiles, American Cancer Society Daffodil Days, and at the Meals on Wheels of Forest City.  All her life, Sophie was devoted to her family and loved nothing more than being in their company.  She loved laughter and a good joke.  Her sense of humor kept everyone on their toes.

Well known as an accomplished seamstress, Sophie volunteered her services and talents to many local organizations, including the clergy, police and fire departments, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and school organizations and sports teams.

The family would like to thank the staff of Allied Skilled Nursing for their kind and compassionate care that Sophie received over the past five years.

Surviving are her children: Carl Urbas and wife Kathleen, Browndale; Robert Urbas and wife Cynthia, Vandling; Marilyn Szakal and wife Bonnie Adams, Lebanon; Kathleen Osborne and husband Edward, Throop; seven grandchildren: Brian Urbas, Melissa Franks, Beverly Miller, Steven Szakal, Jaclyn Urbas; Steven Yarem; and Jessica Yarem; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Simoncic; and three sisters: Mary Risboskin; Ann Grum; and Lillian Miluszusky.

The funeral will be Friday, August 28th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Delaware St., Forest City.  Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Forest City.  Friends may call at the church from 10 am until mass time.  Arrangements by the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City.
