William T. “Bumper” Moylan, 74, of New Port Richey, FL, died Saturday October 11th. He is survived by his loving wife Lynda.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late William and Marie Verrato Moylan, he was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale. He held several college degrees including a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Science from the University of Maryland, a Management Science Degree from Kean University and a Post-Bachelor Certificate in Paralegal Studies from Fairleigh Dickenson University. He retired as Lieutenant of Investigators from the Union County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office after a 28-year law enforcement career. During his tenure with the Prosecutor’s Office, he worked in an undercover capacity investigating narcotic enterprises. He was an investigator and supervisor in the Arson/Bomb Squad and Homicide Units and the Commander and Senior Bomb Technician in the Union County Bomb Squad. Following his retirement from public service, Bumper continued his mission in the private sector for more than 21 years, most notably with SEA, Ltd., specializing in fire origin and cause investigations. His work and mentorship influenced countless professionals in the arson investigation field. Bumper served as a volunteer firefighter and was an instructor in Fire Chemistry and Origin and Cause Determination in the Union County Fire Academy. He was an adjunct professor at the Union County College teaching subjects in criminal investigation and fire origin and cause.
He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the FBI/Redstone Arsenal Hazardous Devices School for Bomb Technicians. He is a life member of the International Association of Arson Investigators and held offices in both the New Jersey and was Past President of the Florida Chapter of the IAAI. In addition, he was a member of the National Association of Fire Investigators, the National Fire Protection Association, the International Association of Marine Investigators, the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators, the American Society for Testing and Materials Fire Standards Committee E05, the Society of Fire Protection Engineering, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, the Florida State Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association, the Florida Association of Licensed Investigators and the Florida Association of Private Investigators, Inc. He was also a licensed Funeral Director in the State of Florida. He was a collector of antique fire trucks, notably the owner of Carbondale Fire Department’s Truck 1 and Engine 5 after their retirement from active duty. He was also a member of the Florida Antique Bucket Brigade.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his brother: Thomas and wife Maryanne; a son: William; a daughter: Holly; a nephew: Michael; and a niece: Melissa.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday November 11th at 11:30 am at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
