Obituary

William James “Jimmy” Muir, 92, of Carbondale, died Monday January 30th at the Carbondale Nursing Center after an illness.  His wife is the former Jean Wigfall; the couple was married in 1950.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Darwin Muir and Phyllis Edmunds Schoonover, he was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale.  He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War and the Army National Guard, 109th infantry, having been a survivor of the September 11, 1950 train wreck in Ohio while enroute to Camp Atterbury in Indiana.  Prior to his retirement, he was the owner and operator of Jim’s Texaco Service Station, a fixture on Salem Avenue in Carbondale for over 50 years.   Jimmy was the longest serving active member of the Andrew Mitchell Hose Company #1, Carbondale, where held many offices including President, Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Trustee, and Captain, since joining the company in 1961.  He was a board member of the Carbondale Volunteer Firemen’s Association for over 40 years.  He was also active in the Carbondale Fire Police, where he served as Captain and Treasurer; and he was a member of the Lackawanna County Fire Police.  Jimmy was an avid hunter, bowler, and fisherman; he always looked forward to his yearly fishing expedition to Canada with his friends.  He also enjoyed spending summers at his cottage at Elk Lake.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of the Carbondale Nursing Center and Traditional Hospice, and Doctors Neal Davis and Tamrat Bekele and Theresa Micknick, PA and their staffs for the compassionate care given to Jimmy over the years.


Also surviving are seven children: Nancy Grant and husband Peter, Hampstead, NC; James Muir and wife Donna, Milton, DE; Barbara Tolerico and husband Carl, Carbondale; Deb McNamara, Union Dale; Susan Muir and husband Donald Hoyle, Mayfield; Bob Muir and husband  Jim Abbott, Hardon, VA; Kathie Nevins and husband Mike, Browndale; eleven grandchildren: Jennifer McDonald and husband John; Michael Tolerico; Geoff Grant and wife Ana; Nicole Wall and husband Bobby; Katie Haas and husband Jereme; Jesse Muir and wife Christine; Jamie Shinn and husband Sean Graham; Beth Austin and husband Larry; Matthew Nevins; Alex Hoyle; Luke Nevins; ten great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; two sisters: Darlene Damiano and Bonnie Milligan, both of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.


He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law: John McNamara; two brothers: Darwin and Ronald Muir.


The funeral will be Monday February 6th in the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, with services at 3:30 pm.  Private interment will take place in Union Dale Cemetery.  Friends may call Monday, from 2 pm until service time.
